On Thursday, the 3rd
July, 2003 Mary believes she was bitten by an insect, in all probability a
spider, possibly a brown recluse, whilst gardening. The next day she
noticed some swelling around the bite area and by Sunday (the 5th) it was
a well-defined area. The central part was a small swelling with a large (2
inch diameter) red area, which was very hot. There were not any other
side-affects. On Monday Mary had surgery to remove some screw and a plate
from her foot, the result of an accident last year. Prior to the surgery
the surgeon checked the bite and decided the surgery could proceed. The
bit receded for a while after surgery but flared up again during the week.
By Friday it was larger and had started draining. Saturday we visited the
doctor. Originally they wanted to lance the bite to allow it to drain more
freely but after cleaning it up they decided it was draining well enough
already. She was given a shot and put on a course of Cipro and Bactroban
cream.
Mary's plans for next week include driving Shawn to College Station
for his visit to A&M. (that is not going to happen).
